Strong lifestyle branding as a lifestyle motor coupled with some cute styling means the Aygo is uber cool. It has become the car of choice for the modern urbanite who wants to cruise around town in style, but avoid looking like a cheapskate. Manufactured in Eastern Europe and looking remarkably similar to the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107, it’s our favourite car thanks to its dynamic engine and Toyota’s strong dealer network.

2nd: Fiat Panda

Small on the outside and quite roomy inside thanks to a tall, intelligently designed cabin that offers plenty of room for all passengers. The dashboard-mounted gearshift adds a nice touch to the car’s interior and all versions drive well. The Multijet diesel combines impressive urge with excellent economy. On all but the most basic cars, there are good equipment levels, with top-of-the-range models enjoying all the benefits of air conditioning.

3rd: Volkswagen Fox

Though its styling might be described as quite bland, the Fox is well-constructed and indeed competitively priced. It is a sensible choice for a city car and, with a big brand like Volkswagen you can expect only the best quality, reliability, strong residuals and decent support from your VW dealer.
