Driving an MPV shows the world you’re sexy

Haven’t we got MPVs all wrong? Let me explain. Those boxy, practical seven-seat buses you see shuttling kids to school or to footie training are viewed in the popular mind as, well, perhaps a bit boring. Certainly not sexy. We rarely see single girls or fellas driving them and, if they do, we suspect that it’s not through choice.

But there’s another message that’s plainly there but that we aren’t seeing. If you drive one, chances are that you’re a parent. So you must be attractive - at least, someone thinks or thought you are/were, enough to help you bring children into the world. You must also be a reasonably kind, well-adjusted person – how else could as many as six other people bear to share such a cosy and private space with you? And you must be reasonably wealthy, because buying and running a seven-seater ain’t cheap. So: you’re good-looking, socially adept, well-adjusted and you have a few quid. You’re quite a catch.

Compare and contrast this image with that of your typical sports car driver. He or she has room for just one passenger. Unless that passenger is present and gorgeous, the driver’s looks and charm are open to doubt. And while the stereotype says a flashy powerful car will draw partners to you, think on this. Driving one says nothing about your suitability or ability to become a parent. It might, dare we suggest, even show that you are just a teensy bit caught up in your own self-image? Add this up and your coupe driver may be wealthy, but possibly also selfish and vain. Are they someone you want to spend the rest of your life with? You just don’t know.

So, MPVs drivers everywhere, let’s steer our people-movers with a smile, proud to be who we are: sexy, nice and moneyed. If we run with this, who knows – soon we might even see singles cruising in Renault Espaces, glad of the come-get-me messages they’re sending.
