11/09/2008Too much of a good thing
The car I drove to work this morning has 93 buttons and switches in its cabin. I know; I counted ‘em. And no, before you ask, it wasn’t some exoti-car costing as much as a terraced house: it was a Peugeot. An estate car, actually. How many did I use during my 12-mile journey? Barely half a dozen.
02/09/2008Buy now, with no regrets
Seen your first 58-plate yet? The change of registration brings a rush of new cars to the roads for the start of September. Economic news is gloomy, but if you’ve got the chance to change your car, the deals right now are fantastic. You’d expect us to say that but the offers speak for themselves.
22/08/2008Now that the wrecks have gone… almost
Funny isn’t it, how we so rarely notice when life gets better. A few years back, dumped cars were a nasty part of the street scene in too many neighbourhoods. And if you went for a stroll in your local woods, I’d bet you’d pass some blackened, rusting wreck. For most of us, that’s pretty much gone. Why? Well, full marks must go to local councils and police,
15/08/2008When times are tough, it’s time to buy
Hard times bring out the bargains. Used-car prices have taken a tumble as the economy stutters and there are fantastic deals to be had. If you’re thinking of buying but can’t decide whether to we’d say, go for it. The surge in fuel prices and road tax increases just around the corner mean the market is skewed, though.
11/08/2008Parking: when there’s a race for spaces
Would you travel to a major sporting event, fully expecting to find a car park when you arrive? That’s just what I did at the weekend... and came badly unstuck. Yours truly and nine-year-old son Joey took ourselves to watch Liverpool FC play Lazio in a pre-season friendly. Despite a nasty jam as we approached the ground,
31/07/2008Is slow now the new fast?
Are we all driving just a little more slowly now? Pump prices have eased back by 4-5p over the last week and the Govt’s threatened 2p per litre tax increase is off the agenda. But even if the pressure’s off, the jump in prices we’ve experienced has delivered a nasty, and lasting, shock. It’s pushed fuel economy to the front of my mind, for sure.
28/07/2008Green may be good, but fast cars thrive
Cars that travel farther on less fuel are, predictably enough, the talk of the British Motor Show. But what’s surprising is how many high-speed, high-spend machines feature there, too. Lotus unveiled the Evora, the company’s first all-new model for more than a decade, while Chevrolet popped the covers off its latest Camaro.
23/07/2008Insignia, Fiesta, MiTo: a great new generation of cars
I love the Motor Show. The glitter, the glamour, the sheen on improbably clean car you’re seeing for the first time in the metal. It’s all pulse-quickening stuff. And while car makers this time have pushed their low-CO2, eco-cars hard, there are still more than a few quick and exotic cars on their way to us, too. My favourite from yesterday’s visit?
16/07/2008Penalties are too soft to tame the uninsured
Next time you’re stuck in traffic, take a look at the drivers around you. There’s a good chance that at least one of them has no insurance for the car they’re in. There are, it’s reckoned, two million motorists without insurance – that’s more than one in 20. It’s a huge problem and one that costs you and me money. If you’re doubly unlucky
11/07/2008National chill out week, anyone?
Road rage. Terrifying when you’re a victim, scary and disturbing when you see it happen to others. Now, the RAC says it is what worries drivers most – more than rising fuel costs, gridlock, or speed cameras. The RAC’s report says that a third of us have experienced road rage. But it also reports that half of those quizzed by
