Cars for ski holidays

27/12/11

Mountains in winter offer a special spirit that never ceases to amaze when you first arrive in the valley. Snow everywhere, nature all around and ski are three ingredients that make mountain holidays one of the most exotic holidays you can get. But you need to be prepared.

If you decide to drive to a ski resort, be sure that your car, whether it’s brand new or a used car, is suitable. It wouldn’t be great to have a car problem during your holidays. One of the most important things you have to check before hitting the roads is the state of your tyres. On the snow, opt for winter tyres for better grip and traction. They have the best adherence to the road and are adapted to driving on slippery routes. There are different models of winter tyres so if you don’t know which one you really need, talk to a specialist.

On top of this, snow chains can be helpful for your car, especially because mountain roads are usually narrow and icy. Sharp bends will also make your driving harder, and using chains will avoid your car skidding on the road. But it is important to place them correctly on your tyres, and don’t forget that they have to be put on the drive wheels. Chains are not expensive and are easy to install when you know how – ask for advice at your local garage if you’re unsure. Keep in mind that can damage the tyres if you keep them on too long or if you drive too fast, so always take care when driving with snow chains.

To avoid damaging your tyres you can consider investing in snow socks for cars. It is a piece of fabric that you put on the tyres and it helps give better adherence and absorbs humidity. You can wash them in the washing machine and they are reusable every year: a good investment for car safety.

Before you go, make sure that everything works properly: brakes, batteries, heating and de-icing system, windscreen wipers, and the rest of the car’s mechanisms. Take extra light bulbs, as well as clamps, in case your battery fails. Also add blankets, food and games, in case you end up stuck on the road. It can get cold very quickly when you’re in the mountains. Don’t forget your snow weather kit. To learn more about this, read our guide about it.

Once your car is ready for ski resorts, all you need to remember is your skis. Enjoy your ski holidays with Motors!
