Audi has just released details of a performance version of its new small hatchback, the A1. The car will feature a 1.4-litre petrol engine that uses a supercharger and a turbocharger to turn out 182bhp – an exceptional output for such a modestly sized engine.

The car, which makes its first appearance at the Paris Motor Show this weekend, will be the most powerful A1 available at launch. It will also be the first road-going Audi that uses both types of power add-on. The supercharger begins working from 1500rpm and in most cases disengages from 2400rpm, while the turbo kicks in from 3500rpm.

The result is a car that’ll run from a standstill to 62mph in 6.9secs but still has the potential to return 47.9mpg, while its CO2 output is just 139g/km. This A1 uses a seven-speed S-tronic twin-clutch transmission to direct power to its front wheels. The model will come with just one trim level – S-line – which offers a body kit, 17in alloy wheels and part-leather sports seats, in addition to standard equipment that also includes air conditioning and remote central locking.

UK pricing for the car has yet to be decided, says Audi, but will be announced nearer to the opening date for orders.
