Vauxhall has slashed prices by 20% across its range of cars. The discount, which applies to most models, will be available on new cars purchased between December 27 and January 31. Named ‘Vauxhall countdown’, the move is timed to coincide with the increase in VAT from 17.5% to 20%, which takes effect on January 4. The savings mean that the price of a mid-level Astra drops by £3190, while a top of the range Insignia VXR becomes £6165 cheaper at just over £26,150. This latest campaign means Vauxhall joins a growing number of manufacturers mounting ‘we’ll pay the VAT’-style promotions to encourage private buyers to spend at a time when prices would otherwise rise. The VAT increase adds about £400 to the price of a £15,000 car. Vauxhall’s offer excludes just-revised Corsas but will apply to old stock of these cars. The Antara off-roader range is also left out, along with the Zafira Exclusiv and ES and Expression models across all ranges. To qualify, cars need to be bought and registered on or after December 27 but before the end of January 31.
