Latest version of German small car just pips Toyota's baby car, the iQ, to take the honours The latest Volkswagen Polo has been voted – just – the 2010 Car of the Year. A Europe-wide panel of senior car journalists, including six from the UK, gave the nod to VW’s new small car ahead of six other finalists.
It nipped in with a narrow lead over Toyota’s iQ city car and by a generous margin over the third-placed car, the just-launched new Vauxhall Astra. Competition between the Polo and iQ was intense and the VW took the lead only as the last votes came in from the 59 jurors.
Judges commended the Polo as a ‘very complete, very refined small car which delivers all the consistent qualities VW has become so well known for’. The other finalists were, in order, the Skoda Yeti, the Mercedes-Benz E-class, the Peugeot 3008 and the Citrn C3 Picasso.
