Vauxhall has announced full price and specification details for its all-new Viva city car. The hatchback model will be available in UK showrooms this summer, priced from £7,995 on the road.

Unveiled at last month’s Geneva motor show, the new model represents a new entry point into the Vauxhall range, and replaces the outgoing Agila hatchback. It will sit below both the ‘premium’ Adam supermini and the UK favourite Corsa hatchback.

Buyers will have a choice of two trim levels: SE and SL, the former of which is also available in ‘Air Con’ and ‘ecoFLEX’ guises. Standard equipment levels are reasonably generous, with even the cheapest models getting cruise control, lane departure warning, tyre pressure monitoring, remote central locking, electric front windows, heated door mirrors and front fog lights with cornering function.

SL cars start from £9,495 and are further equipped with electronic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 15-inch alloy wheels and Bluetooth music streaming.

Aimed at families looking for "insanely rational" (Vauxhall's words, not ours) transport, the Viva also comes loaded with safety kit, including ESP and traction control, emergency brake assist, hill start assist and six airbags.

Just one engine will be offered at launch: a 1.0-litre petrol unit developing 74bhp. In standard guise it is capable of 62.8mpg and emits 104g/km of CO2. Buyers looking to minimise running costs should consider the ecoFLEX model, which offers 65.7mpg and road-tax exempt 99g/km CO2 emissions, thanks to mildly revised bodywork and low-rolling resistance tyres.
