Mazda’s award-winning MX-5 has recently celebrated two milestones – the release of its latest guise, and the millionth model being sold.
Released 27 years ago to rave reviews, the adorable convertible has developed a cult following of all ages, thanks in part to its stylish design and reliability.

The smart choice for saving money: Mazda MX-5
Despite being the base model of the trio, the MX-5 SE does not skimp on style. And as it costs from only £18,495, you won’t have to either!
This style is immediately apparent from the exterior of the car, thanks to its 16-inch silver alloy wheels, black fashion bars, LED headlights and dual exhausts. Continuing to the interior, both the gear knob and steering wheel are wrapped in leather – with the latter hosting audio controls for the radio and CD player.
An engine start/stop button, front electric windows and manual air conditioning also come as standard.
The model is powered by an efficient 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-G Petrol powertrain that puts out 129hp and 150 Nm of torque via a six-speed manual gearbox. A top speed of 127mph is achievable, and it takes just 8.3 seconds to reach 62 mph from a standstill.
On top of that, it is surprisingly efficient, producing 139g/km and a combined mpg of 47.1.
The smart choice for value: Mazda MX-5 Icon
The Icon takes the MX-5’s sporty appearance and bolsters it, with contrasting trim and chequers.
Costing only £2,500 more than the SE – at £20,995 – the intermediary option of the MX-5 is designed to turn heads.
On top of the standard features of the above model, it boasts 16-inch Gunmetal alloy wheels, black leather seats, rear parking sensors, dusk-sensing lights and rain-sensing wipers. This makes it perfect for motorists looking for a well-equipped car at a low cost.
The Icon shares the same SKYACTIV-G Petrol powertrain as the lower-spec MX-5, and therefore the, same performance and economy figures.
The smart choice for technophiles: Mazda MX-5 Sport Recaro
Performance-orientated drivers will be immediately drawn to the MX-5 Sport Recaro, and rightly so.
The £24,295 model is powered by a two-litre petrol engine, which puts out 158bhp from the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.
Thanks to this uprated powertrain, the MX-5 Sport Recaro boasts a 0 – 62mph time of just 7.3 seconds, and a top speed of 133mph.
Fuel economy and CO2 emissions aren’t bad either, at 40.9mpg and 161g/km. respectively.
Only 600 of the range-topping model are to be built, and each will come in either Soul Red Metallic or Ceramic Metallic with brilliant black front, side, and rear airdam skirts.
Exclusive 17" Diamond cut alloy wheels feature an "MX-5" logo, while a black rear spoiler completes the look.
In the cabin, the Sport Recaro boasts Recaro seats, a Bose sound system and an intuitive navigation system, making it the must have for technophiles country-wide.
