BMW i3

BMW's pioneering five-door electric car, the i3, was launched in 2013. The normal all-electric driving range is up to 100 miles, though it can be increased to around 180 using an optional range-extender system, which involves the use of a small petrol-powered generator topping up the battery when required.

Built from carbon-reinforced plastic, the weight of this tall hatchback is reduced to make it more economical without sacrificing strength. The lightweight body offsets the heavy batteries that power the car.

The i3 feels nimble and spritely when put through its paces on the road. It tops out at around 93 mph, with a level of acceleration that is almost enough to place the BMW i3 in the sports car league. The cabin is spacious, light and airy, with comfortable seating for four adults.

Having scooped awards all over the world for its innovative, environmentally sensitive design, honours include World Car of the Year, World Green Car of the Year and UK Car of the Year 2014. With its CO2 rating of just 13g/km, the i3 with the range extender represents a significant saving for benefit-in-kind taxpayers. The all-electric model is also completely free of road tax charges.
