The BMW M5 is the big daddy, the king, the boss. It’s quite simply motoring madness of the highest degree from a company that has a long history of pushing the boundaries to the limit, and then some. If you’re looking for an executive auto with a nuclear bomb under the bonnet, the M5 is by far the best around. It’s just mind blowing and has been perched high on its throne for many years.

Indeed the M5 was first unleashed in 1985, and a several generations have followed, each one getting bigger, faster, stronger and more bonkers. Yes you get a refined German attitude on the whole, but press the M button and put your right foot down, and that goes out the window immediately. Available as both a saloon and estate, the BMW makes minced meat of any car check list- performance, handling, design- it’s all sublime.

The great thing about the M5 is that it looks exactly like a regular 5 series, save a few added ‘blingy’ bits, and that means it’s very attractive indeed. Inside you get the same high quality too. Comfort is right up there with the best, and there’s a lot of room so you don’t feel like you’re in a coffin at high speed, plus it’s practical. With a great amount of kit, and awesome attention to detail across every trim level, the BMW is something special to behold.

But it’s the driving experience that’ll really take your breath away. While older generations might not have all the fancy driver assists as the modern ones, every M5 is spectacular out on the road. Thanks to a massive V10 engine it’ll reach warp speed in no time, but some almighty engineering allows for solid and responsive handling, so you can go round corners in your sleep. There’s so much feel it’s like you’re running your fingers along the road.

Be under no illusion though, the M5 is one of the most expensive BMWs out there to buy brand new. But why commit financial suicide when you can get one for a fraction of the cost second hand?
