Designed by Peter Schreyer, the man behind the original Audi TT, the Kia Sportage diesel is a stylish and affordable crossover SUV that makes an attractive alternative to a Qashqai, Kuga or Tiguan.
Based on the same platform as the Hyundai ix35, the Sportage offers a 112bhp 1.7L and two 2.0L units developing either 132 or 181bhp, the bigger engines also giving the option of four-wheel drive. Performance and running costs are competitive, if not the best in class, and the soft suspension means that while the ride is fairly smooth, the handling is less than sporty.
The two-wheel drive models are labelled as Sportage 1, 2, 3 and 4, and the four-wheel drives add KX' to the names. The Sportage 1 comes with pretty much everything you need as standard, including air-con, cruise control, electric windows throughout, automatic wipers and Bluetooth connectivity. However, the 2 and 2KX come highly recommended, as they add half-leather seats, a sunroof and parking sensors.
Space inside a Sportage is good, comfortably accommodating four adults. There's plenty of head and leg room in the back, but bear in mind that if you do have three passengers in the back, the large central tunnel may mean space is compromised a little. Boot space, however, is significantly better than the Qashqai or Skoda Yeti, offering over a third more capacity with the rear seats in place.
