The large town of Bedford is the administrative centre for the surrounding county of Bedfordshire. Positioned north of London, around 80,000 people live there, and it’s twinned with a number of areas including Bamberg in Germany, Arezzo in Italy and Wloclawek in Poland.
Originally a market town in the Middle Ages, Bedford quickly developed into a centre for Lace in the 1500s, and then became an important area for engineering thanks to the development of certain transport links, including a railway in the 19th century.
The county at large is known for a number of different things, including farming, picturesque villages and Second World War intelligence stations like Chicksands. Indeed there’s a lot more to the relatively laid back area than meets the eye.
There are loads of important landmarks in Bedford that seamlessly blend history with comparative modernity. The Castle Mound is all that’s left of a one mighty medieval fortress, and St Paul’s church is another impressive structure. A variety of Victorian age parks can be found, the biggest being Bedford Park, complete with cricket ground.
For avid drivers out there, Bedford is almost like a gateway to some magnificent roads that delve deep into a rich and environmentally diverse part of the UK. Obviously there’s good motorway links to major cities, but it’s the country roads that really get people excited, of which there’s an abundance. It’s possible to have a lot of fun cruising around the hedgerows, especially when the weather is nice.
