Chatham is a small town in Kent that’s situated on the banks of the River Medway. Twinned with Valenciennes in France, the population is in the region of 71,000, and actually the area has quite a diverse history.
A fishing village for many years, it gained prominence during the Elizabethan era due to its proximity to continental Europe, and the natural harbour was therefore used as a base for many warships. Becoming a Royal Dockyard in 1568, shipbuilding and associated industries soon sprang up in Chatham. It was used as a launch base for many Royal Navy vessels.
The decline of the docks in the modern era brought about a stark change to the area, and now it’s used simply as a marina. Many landmarks such as the Naval Memorial can still be seen however. Even though it’s arguably a town in flux, several football clubs, a wealth of shops and several schools can be found. Some notable people including numerous musicians, sportspersons and actors originate from Chatham.
A great deal of countryside can be found around Chatham, and this makes it good for drivers looking to escape the delights of built up areas and have a good time in the garden of England. Greenery makes all the difference, especially when behind the wheel, and some of the back roads are excellent to check out.
