Situated on the Wirral Peninsula, Birkenhead is a coastal town with a population of around 84,000 that’s actually directly opposite Liverpool. With a ‘sister city’ agreement with Midland in the American state of Texas, it’s also twinned with Gennevilliers in France and Latina in Italy.
Birkenhead has a proud history of being a centre for metal working and ship building in the 19th century, and later went on to build some famous Royal Navy warships, including HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Ark Royal, both of which served in the Second World War. These days its role is more port oriented, although some construction and repair work still goes on.
With a thriving arts and cultural scene, there’s more to this town than heavy industry, and in fact there are significant open areas, particularly the Birkenhead Park. Some notable sports teams include Tranmere Rovers F.C and the Victoria Cycling club, the latter of which has produced some Olympic quality riders such as Chris Boardman.
There are some good road networks connecting it to surrounding areas, particularly the Queensway road tunnel (opened in 1934) that allows direct access to Liverpool. What this means is that drivers can get out and about and experience everything from city streets to country roads, and the M53 allows main motorway arteries to be used easily too. The Cheshire countryside is definitely in reach.
