Dudley

The large town of Dudley can be found in the West Midlands, and is home to around 195,000 people. It’s actually the second largest town in the UK. Known for being an industrial centre, the position in the heart of the Black Country meant coal mining and metal working were always of the utmost importance.

A major market town during the Middle Ages, agriculture and iron products have always been an integral part of the town’s make up. Growing in importance since then, the Industrial Revolution saw it become a major industrial hub for the likes of steel production, engineering and even textiles, as well as a coal mining centre. The target of German bombs during the Second World War, later years saw industry, and therefore the area in general decline.

Investment in entertainment venues, and particularly the Merry Hill Shopping Centre has seen some rejuvenation, but Dudley is nowhere near the powerhouse it once was. There are numerous places of interest however, and actually the town attracts a plethora of tourists. Dudley Zoo, the castle, and the Black Country Living Museum are all important attractions, as well as the Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve. The local market has been going since 1260, despite a few modifications.

With good road links to surrounding cities, Dudley is positioned in quite a good area for motorists. A whole lot of countryside to the south and west means once you get away from the sprawling settlement, having an enjoyable day out on 4 wheels is always on the cards.
