If you’re in the market for an MPV, better known as a people carrier, you can’t go far wrong with a Mazda 5. It’s one of the best on sale and combines practicality with affordability and certainly looks the part. The Mazda 5 has been going since 1999 and is one of the best selling people carriers out there. It’s had a few upgrades and facelifts along the way, but who hasn’t? Modern variants are fantastic all-rounders and prove that you don’t have to spend an obscene amount of money to get a great auto.

As with most Japanese cars, Mazdas have a reputation for being good to drive, nice to look at and very reliable. The 5 scores highly on all these fronts and is the definition of unfussy. While other cars in the MPV class are all finicky and fussy about tiny details that aren’t important, the Mazda is the exact opposite. The exterior and interior are uncomplicated in equal measure, and there’s a surprising amount of kit available.

One of the stand-out features of the Mazda 5 is the drive quality, which is akin to a saloon. People carriers have sometimes been compared to minibuses that handle like bathtubs, but there’s no hint of that here. Sharp and agile steering combined with a smooth ride and a decent amount of ‘umph’ makes it a lot of fun.

In terms of practicality, the 5 is immense. It can fit 7 people comfortably and the sliding rear doors make it easy to get in and out of. A huge boot means it’s perfect for the weekly shop and would suit a large family down to the ground.
