Used MG

When most people think about British sports cars, one of the first names that come to mind is MG. Classic in everything from design to performance, the traditional ‘racing green’ colour and excellent driving experience were hallmarks of the famous marque. For people looking for affordable sports cars, MG is an obvious choice.

The MG Car Company was founded in 1924 and initially offered sportier versions of established brands such as Morris. By 1928 though, the brand had grown enough in size and popularity to enable it to start producing its own cars. The earliest models included the TA, TB, TC, TD and TF or ‘T Series Midgets’ and became highly sought after.

In the post war years, MG turned its attention to sports cars and released the MGA and MGB- 2 seaters that were comfortable and stylish but not lacking in performance. This type of car would become the mainstay of the MG range and showed the way forward for ‘gentleman’s cars’ of the time.

After takeovers by BMC and British Layland, the MG brand was applied to upmarket versions of Austin cars- the Metro, Maestro and Montego. Upgraded models including the 200 and 400 series were produced in the mid 1980s and early 90s but were ultimately discontinued even though popular. Rover then got its hands on the name and made the MG RV8 in 1992 when demand for roadsters increased. It then went on to produce the F and TF models which were small but perfectly proportioned.

Following this the MG Rover Group was formed in 2000 and the beastly ZS and ZT were released, offering something of high performance for people in need of family sized cars. Possibly the best product of the modern era though is the XPower SV, a stunning V8 with hugely impressive performance specs to rival its smouldering looks.

With a turbulent history, the one thing that is clear is that MG is a quality car brand that has produced some fantastic autos over the years. Despite the takeovers and shameless branding on poor quality cars, the spirit of the brand lives on and proves that excellent things are possible.

Finding a second hand MG at Motors.co.uk is straightforward and there’s a good selection to choose from. Reduced prices mean getting a bargain is always on the cards and you can put something phenomenal on your driveway for less.

If you’re looking for a car that’s typically British, delivers a good amount of performance and looks great, seriously consider an MG!
