MG Midget

The MG Midget originated from the Austin Healey Frogeye' Sprite of 1958. The first model appeared in 1961 as the deluxe' version of the more conventional-looking Sprite Mk2.

The earliest Midgets boasted fun handling and eager performance, despite a 948cc engine that produced just 46bhp, thanks to their tiny dimensions and light weight. A year later the engine was upgraded to the 1098cc A-Series unit which gave an extra 10bhp. The Mk2 of 1964 added another 3bhp as well as refinements like front disc brakes, wind-up windows and outside door handles. In 1966 the Mk3 swapped in the 1275cc engine from the Mini Cooper S and replaced the old roadster top with a convertible roof that stowed behind the front seats. Creature comforts like heating didn't become standard until 1969.

The final Mk4, introduced in 1974, adopted a lean-burn version of the 1.5L engine from the Triumph Spitfire in order to meet US emissions standards, and is easily identified by its black plastic bumpers. These later models also raise the suspension by an inch, and offer a smoother, less bouncy ride than their smaller-engined siblings.
