Peugeot 205

The Peugeot 205 is one of the most recognisable super minis ever made. It’s simply an iconic car that’s hot property for new drivers and city dwellers alike. Small, stylish and sprightly, there’s a lot to like about it, and that’s why winning automotive awards was second nature. If you’re on a budget and need a tiny car, get this!

A whopping 5.3 million units were produced between 1983 and 1998. The Peugeot was available as a 3 or 5 door hatchback and a 2 door cabriolet, so appealed to a wide range of motorists. Masses of different models were released over the years, and as ever the GTi versions were most sought after. No matter how much money you want to spend or how fast you want to go, there’s a 205 out there to suit your needs.

Small dimensions, quite an angular shape and a famous front grille were part and parcel of this funky little car. Even though it was upgraded numerous times, the same features could be seen on every model. Inside, the 205 is rather sparse, but is solidly put together and features some lively colour schemes on higher spec models. A lot of plastic was a hallmark of its time, but overall it’s quite comfy, although rear passengers in the 3 door versions don’t have much leg room. There’s an adequate boot however, which can take shopping or a few bags.

The driving experience is what the Peugeot is most known for- it’s very perky and enjoys being thrown around. You can have a lot of fun without going fast thanks to the good chassis and excellent cornering ability. However if you really want to get the adrenaline pumping, the 1.9 litre GTi versions are definitely hot hatches of the highest order. Very sporty and amazingly agile, you won’t want to drive anything else.

Having been around for so long, it’s not difficult to pick up a bargain used Peugeot 205, although you’ll have to look in the right place to ensure you get a good one. Motors.co.uk is definitely one of the best websites for second hand cars for sale around, and lists nothing but the absolute best autos. What you’ll get is a quality car every time for a very low cost, and that’s the definition of a great deal.

The bottom line is that if you’re looking for a brilliantly fun car and don’t have much money to spend, the Peugeot 205 should be right up your street. Cheap to buy and cheap to run, it’ll suit new drivers down to the ground, and its tiny size means urbanites will love it too. The truth is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a good car, and here’s the proof.
