The Vauxhall Meriva is a modestly sized people carrier with plenty of internal space and a good level of comfort. It is also very reasonably priced. The car was launched in 2003 and a new version was introduced in 2010 which brought its appearance more up to date, and is somewhat larger and generally more refined than the original.
There are plenty of engines to choose from, so you can opt for good pulling power or optimum economy. The most economical unit is the 1.3 diesel engine, which does 58 mpg. There is also a high performance version called the VXR (see below).
Although people carriers are not renowned for their abilities on winding roads, the Meriva does handle surprisingly well. To some extent this is due to the long wheelbase and lack of excessive overhang. It is quite responsive and the body roll is not at all bad for a car of this class even though the suspension system is biased towards comfort rather than performance.
This is an excellent car for a large family and is very practical. There is a large amount of load space, rear hinged sliding rear seats, under floor storage and doors that open extra wide, which are ideal for less mobile passengers.
There are plenty of used Vauxhall Meriva models for sale across the UK, from approved Vauxhall dealers, independent traders and private sellers. Wherever you are in the UK we will be able to find a great deal on a used Vauxhall Meriva near you.
The model with the highest level of performance is the Meriva VXR which is a kind of cross between people carrier and hatchback. It has 17 inch alloy wheels, sports suspension and is powered by a turbocharged 178 bhp 1.6 litre petrol engine, which gives it a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 7.9 seconds. There is also a button that you press when you need even more power, which gives it a five second power boost.
