Vauxhall Omega

An incredibly popular and successful car, the Vauxhall Omega is a full size executive motor that’s the definition of reliable, comfortable and value for money. While it’s not particularly noticeable or exciting in terms of design, it does the job superbly and is a real workhorse. If you’re looking for something that works well no matter what and delivers an exceptional driving experience for comparatively little money, keep reading.

Produced between 1986 and 2003, the Omega was available as a 4 door saloon or a 5 door estate. 2 main generations can be seen, the first being a European Car of the Year for 1987. Although earlier versions were more ‘value’ oriented, later models were geared much more towards executives, and were even branded ‘mobile offices’. A vast array of engines and specs meant there was one to suit pretty much any type of driver, the sporty Omega V8 edition being the best made.

On the style side of things, the most modern versions of the Vauxhall are extremely modest, but do have some nice features like chrome outlines around the logo and attractive alloy wheels. While not ugly, they don’t really inspire or get the heart pumping. Compared to the latest executive cars, this Omega is back in the dark ages, but in its time it was actually cutting edge so you can’t fault it that much. A good cabin size means plenty of leg room, and it’s comfortable too. Higher end versions have a massive amount of kit, and the boot space on the saloon is cavernous; the estate could probably fit an ocean liner in it.

Thankfully the Omega drives well and is very calm and collected. With some nicely weighted steering, it can really be a lot of fun on windy back roads and is just as good as a motorway cruiser. There are loads of different engines, the 2.5 litre diesel being one of the best, as well as the V6 petrol. Obviously the V8 is the one to go for it you want high performance, but there’s more than enough power for regular people with the normal ones.

Finding a good used Vauxhall Omega is very easy indeed, mainly because so many were produced and the production life spanned almost 20 years. However if you really want a good one, check out the vast selection here at Motors.co.uk as quality isn’t something that’s overlooked. Serious price reductions on top make it a bargain hunter’s paradise and you’re all but guaranteed to come away with a great deal.

Plainly then, the Vauxhall Omega is a solid executive car that’s just as good for families. Reliable, economical and good to drive, there’s not much that can go wrong with it and consistency is something it does very well indeed. While it won’t get you overly excited in terms of design, it’s simply a superbly versatile all rounder that never fails to impress.
