Audi RS6
The Audi RS6 is a pumped up, aggressive and altogether high performance version of the regular A6 car. It’s a mid size executive level auto with a beastly attitude and no lack of power. Super fast, super understated and super expensive, modern versions are among the most powerful production motors out there, and drive like a dream as you’d expect. If you’ve got the cash and need something akin to a nuclear explosion in your life, the RS6 is definitely the one to go for.
The mind blowing Audi was first released in 2002 and several upgrades and generations have followed since. It’s available as an estate or saloon, and is ideal for scaring the life out of high flying executives of family members lucky enough to catch a ride. The RS badge, which means ‘racing sport’ is effectively a warning sign that this car is mental and should be driven with caution. But with Audi’s Quattro 4 wheel drive system and a monumental amount of gadgets, technology and engineering wizardry, it’s quite easy and forgiving to get behind the wheel of.
The great thing about the RS6 is that it looks like the regular car, only with a few minor adjustments. Some subtly imposing body panels, a rear diffuser and a fantastic choice of colour schemes mean it’s understated but certainly not underwhelming. The interior is finished to a superb standard and is really a wonderful place to get into; although it’s not drastically different from the normal A6, there are some nice features like Recaro racing seats, carbon fibre panels chrome switches and ‘racing’ steering wheels. A huge amount of equipment, excellent levels of comfort and space, and no lack of practicality- especially in the estate- mean it’s a great everyday auto that just happens to be Earth shatteringly fast.
While it’s a heavy car at 2 tonnes, the Audis truly exceptional to drive, and going fast is done with remarkable ease. With the Quattro system it’s anchored to the road and you get excellent traction in all conditions. The handling is so responsive it’s like the steering wheel is an extension of your body, and it’ll go exactly where you want without question. Hugely agile and incredibly poised, it’s just epic all around. But then you come to the engine department which is unlike anything you’ve ever seen- a massive V10 engine gives it 580 horsepower and it’ll go from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds. This means it’s quicker than most other cars on the road and is almost verging on super car territory. To achieve this performance without breaking a sweat is truly incredible.
Paying full price for the RS6 is certainly one way to go, but the fact you’d probably have to move house afterwards means taking the second hand route is by far the best option. Paying less for a used Audi RS6 is a bit of a coup, but it’s more than possible and gives you a lot of car for your cash.
The honest truth is that high performance versions of regular road cars are rather a common occurrence these days, and the same old names keep cropping up. The Audi RS6 blows them all out of the water in dramatic fashion. Yes it’s understated in design and yes it’ll cost a small fortune brand new, but what you get out of it is a car that’s all powerful, easy to drive and very practical. It’s just perfection.
