Citroen Saxo
The Citroen Saxo is a super mini that’s quirky and full of French charm. It’s a real ‘get in and go’ kind of car, and is a pleasure to take out onto the road thanks to a sprightly driving experience. The Saxo was introduced in 1996 and enjoyed a good run until production stopped in 2003. Over this time it had become one of the most popular cars in its genre, and was more than a match for the likes of Peugeot and Renault. Available in 3 and 5 door hatchback models, it did the job perfectly, and the sporty VTR and VTS models really were bone fide hot hatches that raised the appeal even further.

The inside is also rather plain compared to Citroen’s modern roster, but remember this is a car that’s all about value for money and motoring on a budget. If anything it clear it’s that the Saxo more than makes up for its conservative designs with an exciting and almost addictive drive. Even the standard 1.1 litre engine is supremely nippy and great around town, but the supped up VTR and VTS models are in a class of their own. All versions are easy to drive and handle very well indeed thanks to some confident steering and a relatively comfortable ride. Fun would be an understatement.

So really the Saxo is a deceptive little car. It looks quite understated and from the outside and the inside is also rather conservative, but get it on the road and it comes alive. It’s a pleasure to drive and has a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that’s not found in modern autos. Exciting, quite practical and very cheap to run, it’s a fantastic option for those people on a budget.
