Daihatsu is the oldest Japanese car manufacturer and one of the most established. Renowned for its fleet of small cars and off roaders, the company proves that size doesn’t matter and mixes it with the heavyweights on a regular basis. Somewhat unremarkable to look at but a lot of fun to drive, the brand demonstrates everything that’s great about Japanese motoring.
While Daihatsu can trace its origins back to 1907, the name wasn’t used until 1951. Initially the company was all about 3 wheelers such as the Midget, but began manufacturing proper cars in 1958. With the demand for cars growing massively in Japan, the company duly obliged and the Sport, Compagno and Fellow were some of the earliest offerings.
Always looking to push boundaries, Daihatsu even joined the racing circuit and achieved victories at both Sazuka and Fuji in the 1960s. However the car that would perhaps define the company and its future was the small and hugely economical Charade from 1977. The whole philosophy of ‘small outside but big inside’ was adopted and the Daihatsu hasn’t looked back since.
In Japan, Daihatsu motors are best known for being ‘kei cars’, which are designed to get around tax and insurance charges due to their small size. While it’s not the case in Britain, the sprightly driving experience, ease of parking and incredible economy make them popular among city dwellers in particular, but people who live in the country would better appreciate the roster of off road cars such as the Terios.
Looking around, it’s clear that Motors.co.uk has a fabulous selection of used Daihatsu cars at very reasonable prices. The inexpensive nature of the brand coupled with impressive discounts means you can get a great deal across the board.
So if you’re looking for something small, cool, enjoyable, inexpensive and full of beans, a Daihatsu could be right up your street!
