However the car that would perhaps define the company and its future was the small and hugely economical Charade from 1977. The whole philosophy of ‘small outside but big inside’ was adopted and the Daihatsu hasn’t looked back since.
In Japan, Daihatsu motors are best known for being ‘kei cars’, which are designed to get around tax and insurance charges due to their small size. While it’s not the case in Britain, the sprightly driving experience, ease of parking and incredible economy make them popular among city dwellers in particular, but people who live in the country would better appreciate the roster of off road cars such as the Terios.
