Dodge Avenger
The Dodge Avenger is a typically American take on a large family car. It’s a bit of a hulk and certainly stands out because if a bold and unique design. Relatively cheap to buy, there’s a good amount of space inside and it even has an engine from Volkswagen. If you’re looking for something big, brash and boisterous, this is the car for you.
When it was first released in 1995, the Avenger was a large 2 door coupe, however production on this model ended in 2000 and the nameplate wasn’t used again for another 8 years until the 4 door family sized saloon came along in 2008. There have been several upgrades since, and the modern versions are a world away from the original. The Avenger has been used in NASCAR, and this has only cemented its place as a stereotypical ‘rootin-tootin’ muscular cruiser, but that’s not a bad thing at all.
With a name like the Avenger, you’d expect this car to be a bit of a beast to look at; it doesn’t disappoint in the slightest. A huge front end with that classic front grille tells you immediately that it means business, and it’s much the same right to the back. It’ll certainly stand out in traffic, especially in the bold colour schemes that are available. Head inside and things are just as oversized- the cabin is massively spacious and comfortable. There’s a lot of cheap plastic which is a shame, but everything is easy to use and there’s also a quite a wide array of kit, in addition to a large boot.
Expecting this car to be as sharp and poised at a quality European saloon is rather naïve, but that said it’s not bad to drive at all. The handling is surprisingly good and the ride is lovely and soft as well. While it’s not the most exciting in the corners, it does the job well and is most at home as a cruiser. Several different petrol engines and a VW sourced diesel give you food for thought, but the latter is certainly standout.
The Avenger isn’t a particularly expensive car anyway, but there’s still more than enough opportunities to get one for significantly less of the cost if you buy second hand.
