Fiat Cinquecento
Those people in search of a small car that’s cheap, cheerful and cheeky couldn’t do much better than the Fiat Cinquecento. It might be a bit out of date, but there’s still a lot to like about it- particularly the low price tag and minimal running costs. Great fun to drive, and excellent around town, it’s just a fantastic option that doesn’t disappoint.
Launched in 1991, the front wheel drive, 3 door hatch back was very popular in Europe until production ended in 1998 and it was replaced with the Seicento. Due to its miniature size and low weight, the small but sprightly engines made it lively to drive, the 1.1 litre FIRE (Sporting) being particularly nippy. A plethora of models were subsequently released, including the 903/899, Elettra (electric version) and Abarth.
With its understated but mischievous design, the Cinquecento is a good looking car; the slightly flared wheel arches and smiley front end are particularly pleasing. It might not have all the trappings of modernity inside, but it is comfortable and solidly built. Not particularly spacious however, there’s also not a great deal of kit to speak of, although the 1.1 Sporting gets sports seats and a few extras. Quite tight in the cabin as well, the boot is adequate for a few shopping bags, but it’s not really practical or suited for long journeys.
The Fiat is most happy whizzing around city streets and nipping in and out of traffic. With its front wheel drive setup, the handling is excellent and there’s a shed load of grip in the corners. With a firm ride that’s not the harshest around, overly bumpy tarmac could be an experience, but on the whole it’s not bad at all. The small but zingy engines mean venturing out onto country roads is a lot of fun, but motorways really aren’t its forte.
To be honest, the Fiat was a nicely priced car back in the day, so now you can pick one up for pennies. Finding the best quality ones is easier than you might think, especially with Motors.co.uk at your disposal. It lists the absolute best used cars for sale around at low prices, so coming face to face with a monumentally good deal is simply a case of a few mouse clicks. A second hand Fiat Cinquecento offers a lot of fun for very little money, so what’s not to like?
Plainly, if you’re operating on a tight budget and want a small car that performs well and is a lot of fun, the Fiat should be near the top of your list for sure. While it might be a bit of a veteran now, it’s still very capable against modern (and more expensive) superminis. Low cost and brimming with personality, you won’t find anything better for less.
