Fiat Idea
If you’re looking for a cheap mini MPV, the Fiat Idea is, well, it’s a good idea! Low cost all around, you’ll pay a small amount for it, and next to nothing to keep it running. But by far the best feature is the interior space which is hugely impressive for such a small car. Not overly stylish or fast, it’s just a good solid solution for families.
First introduced in 2003, the Idea stands for ‘Intelligent Design, Emotion and Architecture’. The 5 door people carrier is front wheel drive, and comes with a range of different petrol engines that range from 1.2 to 1.4 litres, and diesel Multijets from 1.3 to 1.9 litres; they offer sprightly performance and economy, but not huge speed. Face lifted in 2006, there’s also an ‘off road’ version or mini XUV in the form of the Idea Adventure.
A cute and funky little car, the Fiat looks to pack a lot into very little space. The body shape is nice and gives off a friendly attitude, which is reinforced by some lovely colours from a wide ranging palette. The cabin is roomy and 4 adults get sit in comfort thanks to the tall shape; this is also a feature in the 320 litre boot, which is actually very generous. 3 different trim levels- Active, Dynamic and Eleganza- feature quite a bit o kit and overall there’s an intuitive but durable approach to everything.
The Idea is nippy and easy to drive, and loves to potter around at its own pace. With a soft ride and relatively responsive steering, it can handle anything from urban streets to car parks, so doing the school and supermarket runs pose no problem at all. You’ll find some terrific fuel economy from the small engines as well, so cruising around without spending much cash is what it’s all about.
