Fiat Seicento
That Fiat Seicento is a small city car that’s incredibly cheap to run, has some relatively funky designs and a classy interior. The low cost nature of it makes it the perfect car for new drivers, young people or those who don’t want to spend a huge amount on motoring. However despite the lack of price, it’s still a solid little auto that’s well worth considering.
It was produced between 1998 and 2004, and over 1 million were made. With its 3 door hatchback or panel van layouts, it’s certainly pint sized but packs a decent punch nonetheless. Re-badged as the Fiat 600 in 2005, this was in homage to the classic 1955 edition on which the Seicento was based in the first place. Several upgrades and a few special edition versions were also produced, most notably the Novitec.
On the design side of things, it looks exactly how you’d picture a small, cheap Fiat to look. Cute and quaint but with a definite injection of Italian style, it’s really rather good, if a little understated compared to modern superminis. The inside is rather small but features some lively colour schemes and an easy to use cockpit. Equipment isn’t really that extensive, but the wealth of trim levels provide you with some good stuff; the Sporting and Michael Schumacher versions are particularly tasty. You’d probably only fit a few small objects in the boot, so it’s not a family car that’s for sure.
Behind the wheel, the Fiat motors along nicely with its small engine, although the higher spec versions get some Abarth treatment which beefs this up considerably. The handling is good and you get a nice feeling through the steering wheel, which makes taking on tight streets or nipping in and out of traffic very easy. While it could probably venture out onto normal roads, the Seicento is definitely most at home in built up areas.

Ultimately the Fiat Seicento is an excellent city car that works very well. It’s quite attractive to look at and solid to drive. Most of all however, it’s cheap, and that makes it a brilliant option for those people on tight budgets. The fact is that if you want an inexpensive small car, this is one of the best.
