      Ford Explorer

American SUVs are big beasts that dominate the road and look like tanks for the most part. The Ford Explorer is no different and is actually quite impressive to behold. Despite its overbearing presence, it’s actually a great car for families who want a hugely spacious car that’s extremely well equipped and durable. The Ford will take pretty much anything that’s thrown at it and keep plugging away, which is reassuring.

Introduced to the UK in 1997, the Explorer was actually a huge flop. People simply couldn’t understand it and weren’t prepared to pay the obscene amount of money Ford wanted. It was removed from sales rosters in 2001. There have been several different generations over the years, which are still available in the US and elsewhere as 3 and 5 door models.

To look at, the Explorer is hefty, quite muscular and decidedly boxy; it’s got a certain sporty look to it though and will tower above pretty much all other traffic. Modern versions are actually quite futuristic in terms of exterior design. The inside has always been a big selling point as it’s akin to the Titanic in size and comes with a massive amount of equipment, as you’d expect from an American car. Impressively comfortable, it’s also got a huge boot that’ll swallow anything that’s offered up to it.

To be honest while the Explorer is fantastic in terms of practicality and comfort, you’ll need a hefty pay check to cover the running costs as they are astronomical on older models. With big V6 engines as standard, you’re looking at something like 20mpg, but also at some impressive performance figures. It handles well and the ride is comfortable too, plus you’ll get a good feeling from the steering which is rare from cars of this size.

If you’re really looking to bag a bargain, there’s no better way than with used cars for sale. Getting your hands on a cheap second hand Ford Explorer at Motors.co.uk is incredibly easy as there’s a monumental selection and serious price discounts. Any way to keep costs down should be investigated fully, and you’ll be shocked with what’s available.

Clearly then, the Ford Explorer is a monster of an SUV that commands the road but is really a big softy. It’s massively spacious inside, fully equipped and supremely comfortable. If you’re after a family car that’ll stand up to the rigors of everyday driving and still deliver in spades, it’s the perfect choice. The Explorer has always been a great car, so give it a second chance.
