      Ford Sierra

The Ford Sierra is a large family car from back in the day that did an awful lot to influence the British motoring scenery. From the radical ‘aero’ designs to the reliability and solid performance, it was able to deliver exactly what the public wanted on a variety of different fronts. Well built and quite versatile, it still represents value for money for keen eyed buyers today.

Produced between 1982 and 1993, the Sierra replaced the Cortina and proved very popular indeed, not least to the styling that was totally new and very bold. A host of different generations, models and trims can be found, with high performance Cosworth variants being the pick of the bunch and popular today. The rear wheel drive setup provided a good level of solidity, and a massive number of engines can be found both in the saloon and estate. Clearly there’s a Sierra for everyone.

Yes in terms of design, the aerodynamic shape was certainly futuristic and ahead of its time back then, but doesn’t look like anything special nowadays, such is the fast rate of development. The Ford is a handsome car though that has a lot of appeal, especially face lifted versions. Interiors were good across the board, and came with a functional layout, comfortable seats and large boots. While not heavy on fancy kit, it doesn’t really matter.

As there’s a huge amount of variety in terms of engines and models, the Sierra can be anything from regular and slow to mental and sporty. On the whole however, you’ll be looking at something that’s easy to get behind the wheel of and features a comfortable ride and a predictable feel. If economy is what you’re after, go for something like the 1.3 litre petrol or 1.8 litre diesel; if you’d rather burn rubber and have fun, 2.9 litre V6 could be right up your street.

The great thing about this car is that you can pick one up for next to nothing these days, and shopping at Motors.co.uk makes it very easy. The fact that over 150,000 high quality second hand cars for sale are listed, all you need to do is browse around until you find the used Ford Sierra section and then check out what’s available. Huge price discounts are on offer, so getting a great deal couldn’t be simpler.

Ultimately, the Ford Sierra was hugely popular in the 1980s because it looked good, drove well and did what the people wanted. It’s still a fantastic option today for exactly the same reasons. If you’re on the hunt for something durably built that’ll keep going no matter what, it’s perfect.
