Honda CRX
The Honda CRX is a small coupe with sporting credentials. It looks a bit strange, but has good performance, a solid build quality and a nice sense of fun overall. Available with a removable roof which fits in the boot, it’s a forerunner to modern day ‘coupe convertible’ cars, and is actually rather good because of it.
Produced between 1983 and 1991, two generations of the Honda were available as the CRX proper. A later version, the CR-X del Sol, was built up to 1998, which featured improved designs and performance. With front wheel drive, all models are fun to drive, and the excellent VTEC engines deliver quite a big dose of power despite being comparatively small.
The original versions do look rather ‘space age’ in their designs, with a lot of different angles and a futuristic back end. The del Sol is much funkier and is akin to a modern day roadster with its curves and cheeky personality. There’s a decent amount of room in side the cabin, which is nicely equipped and comfortable as well. It’s not lavishly styled, but does look durable with some hardwearing plastics, all the rage at the time. Boot wise it’s not the biggest in the world, but does the job.
A nippy car to drive due to the FWD layout, the CRX handles well in the corners and produces plenty of grip. It is stable, but with the roof down you’ll notice a few wobbles, although this is nothing to worry about. Capable in towns, on motorways or back roads, the punchy engines will get up to speed quickly and motor around with minimal effort.
