Honda HR-V
One of the quirkiest looking mini SUVs around, the Honda HR-V is a wonderful offering from one of Japan’s premier automakers. It’s a bit of a maverick in terms of design, but is well built, reliable, decent value for money and good to drive nonetheless. The whole point of this car is to be different, and it certainly sees things from a different angle to the rest. That’s why you should but it.
Honda produced the HR-V between 1999 and 2006, and aimed it younger buyers; marketed as the ‘joy machine’, it certainly had a lot to live up to, and the great thing was that it really did perform. Available in both 3 and 5 door models, it could be bought with 2 or 4 wheel drive, although the latter was a significantly better option. While it could venture off road, the HR-V was much happier cruising around on tarmac.
In terms of its appearance then, the Honda was certainly different to most other 4x4s in its time. With tiny headlights, a distinctly frowning boot and some strong lines down its body, it’s not the type to cower from attention. Inside things are put together well and the tactile cockpit makes it very easy for the driver. While there’s not much space in the rear, the front seats are comfortable and have a lot of leg room. The larger 5 door model is a bit more spacious and provides extra boot spaces which increases practicality significantly.
While describing the HR-V as a ‘joy machine’ might have been a tad overambitious on Honda’s part, it’s still good fun to drive. Direct steering and a solid amount of grip make it great for cruising on normal roads, and the large ride height gives extra confidence when the going gets tough. The 1.6 litre VTEC engine is nicely powered and packs quite a punch.
