The Hyundai Matrix is a quirky looking MPV that’s not short on space or comfort. While it might not be the prettiest of people carriers out there, it does the job well and boasts a good kit list, high levels of practicality and excellent value for money. If you’re in the market for a car that’s cheap to run, has space for 5 people and doesn’t mess about, this one is for you.
The Matrix was on sale from 2001 to 2010 saw a plethora of upgrades and facelifts over the years. In traditional MPV style, it was available in 5 door format with a lift-back. While earlier models were rather plain in terms of design, the most modern are actually quite sporty with some nice curves and clean lines.
Inside, the Hyundai is cavernous in proportion and supremely comfortable too. The high roof means taller passengers won’t be phased, and the boot is adequate to accommodate shopping or luggage. While the cockpit is nicely laid out, there’s a whole heap of dull plastic which spoils the feel somewhat, but it’s only to be expected in a ‘value for money’ car. Despite this, the driving position is good, and there’s some excellent equipment available over various trim levels.
Out on the road, the Matrix is relatively composed, although it’s not particularly responsive in terms of steering and the ride is firmer than some. However it’s good around town at low speeds and can more than handle itself cruising along motorways. A choice of petrol and diesel engines deliver some go while remaining frugal, but powerful they are not.
You can find some awesome deals on second hand cars for sale at Motors.co.uk, and big price discounts mean paying less for a used Hyundai Matrix is more than possible. An unrelenting approach to quality means you won’t find anything less than excellent, so what’s the point in paying full price for a brand new car when there are so many bargains to be had?
Plainly then, the Hyundai Matrix is a cheap MPV that doesn’t try to pretend its something else. Fantastic value for money, you get a lot of space, practicality and a solid all rounder. Despite not being hugely attractive or inspiring to drive, it’s certainly worth considering if you’ve got a large family to transport and want something easy on the budget.
