Bedford
The large town of Bedford is the administrative centre for the surrounding county of Bedfordshire. Positioned north of London, around 80,000 people live there, and it’s twinned with a number of areas including Bamberg in Germany, Arezzo in Italy and Wloclawek in Poland.
Originally a market town in the Middle Ages, Bedford quickly developed into a centre for Lace in the 1500s, and then became an important area for engineering thanks to the development of certain transport links, including a railway in the 19th century.
The county at large is known for a number of different things, including farming, picturesque villages and Second World War intelligence stations like Chicksands. Indeed there’s a lot more to the relatively laid back area than meets the eye.

The Castle Mound is all that’s left of a one mighty medieval fortress, and St Paul’s church is another impressive structure.
