Peterborough
The cathedral city of Peterborough is located in the north of Cambridgeshire and has over 174,000 inhabitants. With the Fens situated to the east, several other places including Bourges in France, Forli in Italy and Viersen in Germany have the honour of being twinned with the city.
There’s been a settlement of one form or another since the Bronze Age, but the area developed substantially during Saxon times with the construction of the cathedral. However, during the Industrial Revolution, the city became a centre for manufacturing and experienced huge growth, not least due to the establishment of railways. Brick making in particular is what Peterborough was most noted for.
More of a commuter town these days, numerous businesses, warehouses, distribution centres and retailers can be found in the city. Renowned for its football team, Peterborough United, there are also various cultural attractions and places of interest such as Longthorpe Tower, Burghley House, Nene Park and Flag Fen. RAF Wittering is also situated nearby.
Peterborough is right in the middle of some stunningly beautiful countryside, and has been known as the Gateway to the Fens for many years. For motorists, it’s a phenomenal area because there’s so much to see, and no lack of quality B roads. Furthermore, the city is near the A1M and is also connected to other areas by direct routes.
