Torquay
The seaside town of Torquay is located on the south coast of Devon and sits in the unitary authority of Torbay. It has a population of 64,000 and has been a popular holiday destination for many years. Known as the ‘English Riviera’, it was the setting for the famous comedy Fawlty Towers.
While it grew up as a small fishing village, the 19th century saw a massive amount of growth, the creation of a railway by Brunel and consequently a huge influx of tourists. Indeed Torquay was famous as a seaside resort, and its climate in particular was a major attraction. Frequented by the Royal Navy throughout history, it was an important staging point for American forces during the build up to D-Day in 1944.
The town still remains a tourist destination, with the likes of Stonehenge and Kents Cavern nearby. The harbour, beaches, range of different cultural attractions and no lack of sporting events, particularly water related, make it quite lively in the summer months.
The wide are around Torquay is actually phenomenal for motoring because there’s so much open space. The Dartmoor National Park is exactly due west, but beyond that the whole county is lush, green and home to some variable terrain. Exmoor National Park also lies to the north, so really there’s more than enough opportunity to venture into the wilds. A massive number of B roads and solid motorway links to the M5 make it truly exceptional.
