Basildon is a large town located in Essex, just east of London. A ‘New Town’ established in the 1940s, interestingly it’s twinned with Gweru in Zimbabwe, Meaux in France and Heiligenhaus in Germany, all of which resemble it in no way at all.
Famous for its shops, leisure park (known as BasVegas) and long list of somewhat successful individuals who originate from the area, there are also a number of sports clubs that include football, rugby and cricket.
The first mention of the town was in the Domesday Book of the 11th century, and it also enjoyed an influx of people when a railway was built to connect it to surrounding areas in the 19th century. Skip a few years and it became a New Town in 1949, an initiative that aimed to create modern settlements on otherwise lacklustre land.
These days, there are good transport connections to London, among other places. Rather a commuter oriented town, it takes less than an hour to reach the capital by rail, and road networks are excellent as well. The M25 is within reach, but more importantly there’s potential to escape to country roads, particularly around Epping Forest.
One of the major attractions is the Eastgate Shopping Centre, which is a massive complex visited by millions of people every year. Packed full of big name brands and designer shops, it’s certainly one of the best reasons to visit Basildon in the first place. The Festival Leisure Park is another, and features cinemas, health clubs and even restaurants.
