Brentwood
The Essex town of Brentwood is situated 20 miles due east of London, and is a major commuter settlement as a result. With a population of around 75,000, it’s a relatively up market area, and boasts some picturesque scenery in the surrounding countryside.
Brentwood actually began life as a forest clearing, but soon became developed due to it’s proximity to Roman roads. With the construction of a few churches in the 13th century, it soon became a major resting place for pilgrims en route to Canterbury. Move on a few years and the town was in prime location for stage coaches to stop, and the number of old pubs certainly confirms this.
A proud military history can be seen in Brentwood as well, having been the focal point for troop collection during the Spanish Armada, a base for the East India Company and barrack town for the Essex Regiment more recently. It was also hit with a substantial amount of bombs during the Second World War.
These days, it’s a relatively suburban area, with a large high street and a thriving economy, mostly due to the fact that many wealthier ‘city workers’ live there and commute to London. Numerous big businesses can also be found in the town, including Ford, Amstrad and Equity Insurance Group.
The open country all around Brentwood is excellent news for motorists, as it’s like having a driving hot spot in your back yard. Numerous back roads can be found, and whether you’re driving a sporty number or simply a cabriolet with the top down, what better way to have some fun than in the great outdoors?
