Bolton
Part of Greater Manchester, Bolton is an industrial town with a proud history and a population of around 140,000. Noted for its high number of textile mills during the Industrial revolution and after, it’s more of a cultural centre these days.
With traceable history as far back as the Bronze Age, it grew into a proper settlement during 11th century, and played quite a part in the English civil war. The growth of the cotton industry during the 19th century cemented its place as a powerhouse, and as such numerous canals and rail links were constructed to aid in this. Old mills are still very much present in the ‘cityscape’ today.
The town is famous for a number of things, but mainly the Bolton Wanderers football club, the university and notable individuals such as Peter Kay, Fred Dibnah and Amir Khan. There are a range of interesting landmarks that stand out too, such as the Parish Church, Civic Centre and Le Mans Crescent, which feature some fantastic architecture.
With the Pennines in reach, Bolton is a great location for drivers to visit. Not only are there fantastic motorway connections with the A6 and M61, but it doesn’t take long to get away from the crowds and into the countryside. Numerous back roads mean you can have a lot of fun, and some lanes are a great challenge to get stuck into.
