Rochdale
Rochdale is a market town situated in the north east of Greater Manchester. Bordering the Pennines, it has a population 96,000 and is twinned with several different places around the world- Bielefeld in Germany, Tourcoing in France and Sahiwal in Pakistan.
Famous for being a centre for textile manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution, this period saw immense growth and the construction of the Rochdale Canal also contributed to the boom. Since medieval times, the town has had a market, and it operates today.
More of a location for commuters to Manchester these days, Rochdale has excellent rail and road links, particularly due to its position along the M62. Although some warehousing does still go on in the town, it is mainly focussed on retail and business. Notable landmarks in the town include the Town Hall, Scout Moor windmill farm, and the Spotland stadium, which is home to the town’s football and rugby league clubs- Rochdale AFC and the Hornets.
The position next to the Pennines puts Rochdale in a superb driving location. Some of the roads that negotiate the valleys and open moorland are truly incredible and make for a lot of fun on 4 wheels. With the Yorkshire Dales also relatively close, there’s really no better place to mount up and have a great time. Whatever the weather, motoring in this area will put a smile on your face.
