Wigan
The town and borough of Wigan is located in Greater Manchester, in the north of England. Positioned south west of Bolton, west of the City of Manchester, and north east of Liverpool, it has a population figure of around 82,000. It is a former industrial centre, mill town and area for coal mining.
An important market town for many years, Wigan became heavily industrialised during the 18th century. It was famous for textile production, and the expansion of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal really improved its fortunes. Also a massive area for coal mining, a railway was built in 1830.
Today, Wigan is an important centre for business, and a huge amount of redevelopment has taken place in the town. Numerous hotels, shops and restaurants can be seen in restored old quarters, and there’s also the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre. With a plethora of different landmarks demonstrating its history, two of the most famous things are the Wigan Warriors rugby league club, and Wigan Athletic football club.
While the town might be positioned right next to a major urban area, it’s not that difficult to get away and lose yourself in the nearby countryside. There are some superb motorway connections like the M6 and M62, so really anywhere can be reached with minimal effort. The Pennines and Peak District are only a short drive away, and the Yorkshire Dales are to the north. With no lack of great views and hugely fun roads, you can’t help but have a good time.
