Andover
The town of Andover is located in Hampshire and derives its name from the River Anton, on which it is situated. With a population of around 52,000, it’s certainly not ‘out in the sticks’, and boats an impressive range of shops and amenities in the centre.
Less than 25 miles from Southampton, the likes of Basingstoke and Winchester are also easily accessible. As a driving location, it’s rather attractive because the countryside is very close, and you can quickly find yourself alone on back roads. The New Forest in particular is within reach.
Quite a historic location, events can be traced back to 950 AD, during the Saxon and Viking times. However it was around 1175 that Andover became a market town with the establishment of numerous guilds. Milling has always been an important activity, and several can still be seen today. Fast forward to the 18th century, and the fact it was located on a major stagecoach route from Exeter to London meant Andover became increasingly more important.
During the First World War, Andover was home to an RAF base and also saw action as a maintenance headquarters and helicopter flying school during the Second World War. These days the airfield is used by the Army and other MOD units, which are actually the town’s main employer.
Andover is home to a wealth of sporting clubs that include football, cricket, hockey, rugby union and even triathlon. Clearly an active place to live, there’s always something going on and being a ‘Heart Town’, healthy lifestyles are a priority.
