Eastleigh
Eastleigh is a town in Hampshire between Southampton and Winchester. Known for being a railway hub in the early 20th century, the town and surrounding borough of the same name are quite densely populated, with a total figure of 120,000 people. These days it serves as a commuter location for individuals working in Southampton, and to some extent London.
Like many other settlements in the area, a lot of history can be found in Eastleigh as far back as the Roman era. However it was the 19th and 20th centuries that really saw a peak in its importance, mainly due to the creation of a railway line in 1838. The London & South Western Railway Company located its engine works in the town, and it grew from there.
Today, the town is a centre for business, and is even home to the Southampton International airport. A notable shopping destination as well, the Swan Centre attracts individuals from all over the county.
Other things that give Eastleigh a claim to fame include the local football club, notable people such as Colin Firth, and the fact that the Supermarine Spitfire first flew from the airfield (now the site of the airport) in 1936.
