Folkestone
Folkestone is a coastal town in Kent with a population in the area of 46,000. Famous for being a seaside resort, as well as the location of the Channel Tunnel exit, millions of people pass through the area every year for this reason. Twinned with Boulogne in France, Folkestone is also known for its attractive sandy beach.
Originally a fishing village, the town became an important trading port in the 13th century. Known for being a popular destination with smugglers, a harbour was constructed in 19th century, and railway links also arrived around the same time. The latter went some way in making Folkestone a resort for tourists.
The decline of shipping hit the town hard, but the construction of the Eurotunnel terminal in the 1990s gave it a new lease of life. It’s also home to numerous large companies such as Church and Dwight, and Saga.
Important landmarks in the area include the Leas cliffs, Martello Tower, the White Horse carving, and several Battle of Britain memorials and museums. The town also hosts music festivals and cultural events, and is home to an array of sporting teams, including football, rugby and cricket clubs.
Situated on the North Downs, Folkestone is in prime position for excellent driving. Not only is there an abundance of picturesque scenery to see, but the roads are great too. Coastal areas are great all year round, but especially in summer. Heading further into Kent, the enjoyment factor goes off the charts- the Garden of England really is automotive heaven.
