Blackburn
Blackburn is a large town located in the northern county of Lancashire. East of Preston and north east of Manchester, it’s easy to see why it grew into an industrial centre back in the day. Paired with Altena in Germany and Peronne in France, the diverse population means there’s a somewhat international outlook.
With history dating back to before the Bronze Age, it was also an important site in Roman Britain, however the Industrial Revolution had the biggest effect on the town, and it dominated textile manufacturing; many mills can still be seen today. Engineering, warehousing and to some extent manufacturing have become the dominant industries these days.
Various landmarks can be found in Blackburn, most notably the famous Cathedral, a statue of Queen Victoria and Corporation Park, a 50 acre patch of greenery. Architecturally, there are some fine buildings, such as the Technical School and Town Hall that really do bring life to areas that have been trapped in modernity.
There’s no doubt that one of the most famous things about the area is the football club- Blackburn Rovers. Based at Ewood Park, the Premiership side have enjoyed mixed fortune since the ‘golden age’ of the early 1990s.
The location of the town in relation to surrounding countryside such as the Pennines and East Lancashire Hills means there’s an almighty amount of roads to explore, and any number of green lanes. Simply superb for drivers who want a bit of a challenge, the countryside really does offer a lot of enjoyment. Connections to motorways such as the M65, M6 and M61 are also close to hand.
