Preston is a city in the county of Lancashire in the north of England. It has a population figure of 115,000 and has the pleasure of being twinned with Almelo in the Netherlands, Kalisz in Poland, Nimes in France and Recklinghausen in Germany.
The administrative centre of the county, it was given city status in 2002 and in combination with surrounding suburban areas forms the City of Preston district. With a significant amount of history in the area that goes as far back as Roman and Saxon times, it was an important centre for textiles during the Industrial Revolution. Like many towns in the north though, the collapse of industry created many problems.
Today it’s more focused on retail, and the creation of several shopping centres only highlights this. Preston is also home to BAE Systems and is a centre for military aircraft production. Financial services also hold some presence in the city.
Famous for its football club, Preston North End, sport has played a major part in the cities daily life for generations. There are also rugby, hockey and cricket clubs which are also well established.
Surrounded by greenery, Preston is a good place for driving as you really don’t have to go that far to find some excellent roads. The Yorkshire Dales and Peak District are both within distance, and the close proximity to the M6, M65 and M61 motorways means connectivity is certainly high on the list.
