Barrow
The seaside town of Barrow-in-Furness is located in Cumbria and has a population of around 60,000. A major shipbuilding and industrial centre, there’s also a lot of history associated with it. The largest town in the county, only Carlisle outranks it with city status.
Its position on the on the cost and proximity to other key cities including Liverpool and Manchester has always worked in its favour. An industrial centre from the 19th century onwards, the main speciality was steel and metal working, however shipbuilding was also very high on the agenda. Indeed countless warships, such as HMS Invincible, and more recently submarines have been produced, including the Vanguard class. BAE Systems is a major employer in the area as such.
Much regeneration has occurred in Barrow in the last few years, and projects such as the Waterfront have received a great deal of investment. With houses, restaurants and hotels under construction, the old port areas are once again the heart and soul. Why is this occurring? Well mostly because the Lake District is less than 30 minutes away, making the town a gateway to some stunning scenery.
In terms of driving experience, the Lakes are great to motor around, and some of the country roads really are phenomenal. Whether you’re looking to do some off roading, or simply potter around on regular asphalt, there’s a lot to enjoy.
Aside from its industrial heritage, Barrow is famous for its football, rugby league, motorcycle racing and golf clubs. There’s also a plethora of listed buildings which look wonderful. However, an outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease in 2002 gained more attention in the media than most other positive things put together.
