Southport
The seaside town of Southport is located on the west coast of England, in the county of Merseyside. North of Liverpool and south west of Preston, its population numbers around the 91,000 mark, putting it just outside the top 10 most populous areas in the north west of the country.
Founded in 1792, it wasn’t until the 19th century that Southport became popular as a resort town, for people looking to escape from larger urban areas on holiday. Much development occurred during this time, and a pier and tram system were also built; and it really was the quintessential seaside destination. Being somewhat more refined than other areas such as Blackpool, Southport continues to be hugely popular these days as well.
There are numerous annual events in the town, such as the Southport Airshow and also a flower show; many music and gastronomic festivals also take place. Famous attractions include the Pleasureworld fairground, Meols Hall, a model railway village and even a lawnmower museum.
Not only is Southport located on the coast, but it’s also in range of the Pennines and Yorkshire Dales, as well as the Peak District. With such fantastic scenery, it’s no surprise that motorists enjoy leaving the urban areas behind and getting to grips with all manner of back roads on some magnificently variable terrain. There are also quality motorway links all around the town, so it’s certainly not ‘out in the sticks’.
