St Helens
Positioned near Merseyside, St Helens is a large town in Lancashire with a population of 103,000. It shares twin links with Stuttgart in Germany and Chalon-sur-Saone in France, and was made a metropolitan borough in 1974.
Throughout its history, St Helens has been an industrial centre. However it was during the 18th century that things started to get interesting, and a significant amount of development occurred to support the growing coal mining, textile manufacturing, metal working and glass making.
Nowadays, like so many northern towns that saw a decline in industry, St Helens has a notable retail presence. The Church Square and Hardshaw shopping centres dominate, and are home to some popular chain stores. One thing that hasn’t changed is the love for sport, and the St Helens Rugby League Football Club has been the pride of the town since 1873. Rugby union, football and cricket sides can also be found, but are not as popular.
St Helens isn’t too far from some amazing countryside that’s a real dream for drivers. Close to the Pennines, the Peak District and to some extent the Yorkshire Dales, you can county hop and have a great time on 4 wheels the whole way. Whether you’re after some off road action or simply to find some quiet back roads to meander around, it’s all right there to explore.
